Abercrombie – Marion Louise (Tanner) Anderson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, April 20, 2008, aged 81 years, at the Maritime Odd Fellows Home, Pictou. Born in McLellan’s Brook, March 18, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Elizabeth (Wallace) and George Tanner. A longtime resident of Abercrombie, Marion was an active member of her community. She and her husband Elston (Al) owned and operated the White Rose/Shell Service Station for 15 years. Marion was a life member of the Abercrombie Women’s Institute and served a term as the provincial president. She was involved with the Abercrombie Community Centre, Home and School Association, 4-H Club, taught CGIT, was a member of the St. Andrew’s (Kirk) Church choir and was a founding member of the Abercrombie Volunteer Fire Department. Marion had a lifelong interest in politics and was the Liberal candidate in the 1988 federal election. She had a varied career, beginning at age 15 at the Trenton Steel Works. During the war she lived in Etobicoke, Ontario, where she assembled gas tanks for Curtis bombers at the Goodyear factory. Upon her return to Nova Scotia, she married Elston in 1944. She is survived by their children: Anne Elizabeth (Betty Anne) (Robert) MacDonald, Greenfield Park, QC; John (Margie), New Glasgow; and Heather (Jean-Paul Albert), Ottawa; grandchildren: James and Andrew (Ericka) MacDonald; Sherry and Linda Saunders; Baird and Sarah (Bobby Dean) Best; and Hugo Albert; along with five great-grandchildren; sister, Agnes Cameron; sisters-in-law, Verna Mitchell and Mildred Anderson; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Elston; sisters: Elma Neath, Margaret Crawford, Vida Oliver, Vivian Urquhart, Betty Spuehler; brother, Henry Tanner; and infant son, Alexander Fraser. Visitation at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Richard Sand officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment in the Sunny Brae Cemetery. Family flowers only.
