S.M. "Sophie" (O'Brien) Ellis
Date de décès : 19 juillet 2007
WESTVILLE - The family of Sophie Ellis is sorry to announce her passing peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2007 in the Aberdeen Hospital with grandnephew Mark and niece Laura by her side. Born in Westville, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Deraspe) O'Brien. She was educated in Westville and lived all her life in the town. She was employed for many years with the former Goodman Co. of New Glasgow. She was a member of "The Silver Cross Women of Canada". In her earlier years she was very active in her church. She was one of the organizers of "The Ladies Sodality" of the Holy Name Church along with the help of the late Mrs. Katie Carrigan; Mrs. Catherine (Chabassol) Bennett; Annie Chisholm; Irene McInnis (former school teacher of Westville schools) and many others. She served as Vice-President and Treasurer of this club and brought in a lot of money for the church, by having concerts, teas, dances, etc. The dances were held monthly in the Old St. Mary's Hall and were very successful. Sophie will be best remembered for "Devotion to Mother". At the early age of 50, her mother suffered her first stroke followed by a few more. She did not "pass on" until she was in her 80's, which was due to the loving care given by her daughter. This could not have been possible without the support of two dedicated doctors, the late Dr. Henry Fraser and the late Dr. H.B. Whitman, who in those days, visited the homes of the sick. Mrs. Ellis is survived by sisters: Millie Fillier, Pictou; Beatrice Ferguson, Stellarton; Lily Brine, Moncton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother, Fred (Joan), Westville; Bill; Lynn, Mass. Her late husband Sgt. Gerald Austin Ellis, who was the grandson of the late Capt. James Ellis of Digby, was killed during World War II in Udem, Germany. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Saturday in the Church of the Holy Name, Westville, with Father Donald Boudreau officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
