Joan Sybil Noonan Short

(nee Gear) Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Center on Monday, June 16, 2008, Joan Short, aged 86 years. Born in St. John's, Joan was a life-long resident of Newfoundland. As United Church of Canada clergy, Rev. Short served the pastoral charges of Whitbourne, Glovertown and Harbour Grace. She was director and chairperson of Burry Heights board of directors and also served in other presbytery and district capacities. Joan also served as the first female administrator of the Neighbourhood Improvement Program at St. John's City Hall. She received NLOWE's Champion Award for her many pioneer ventures including St. Mary's Bay Crafts and Trelawney B&B. Joan was predeceased by husbands: John "Tiny" Noonan and Selby W. Short; parents: Ernest and Irene Gear; brother: Joseph and sister-in-law: Edna. Joan leaves to remember nieces: Ernestine Baggs, Charlene Scott (Steven); nephews: Joseph (Bernice), Harold (Andrea), as well as many other relatives, friends and colleagues. Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Funeral service will take place from Gower St. United Church on Friday, June 20, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Joan's memory may be made to the Burry Heights Camp and Retreat Center or Gower St. United Church.
