REV. WALTER GEORGE STRATTON

STRATTON, REV. WALTER GEORGE Rev. W. George Stratton of Nackawic passed away April 11, 2006 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born on July 14, 1927 at Safe Harbour, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Stephen and Annie (Arnold) Stratton. Looking back on the life of George Stratton, his was one of love, joy, passion, laughter and dedication. He was nurtured in the Christian faith inNewfoundland and after a short period in the R.C.A.F., he looked very strongly at the Ministry of the United Church of Canada. George spent ten years as a full time lay preacher, serving churches in Ontario, Alberta and Newfoundland. He then furthered his education, attending schools in Halifax, NS and Ontario and in 1971, he was ordained a minister in the United Church of Canada. Rev. Stratton served in the following Maritime pastorates, Centreville, Harvey Station, Welsford, Nackawic and Prince William, NB and Warden, and Glace Bay, NS. He loved the church, serving as Chair of the Woolastook and St. Stephen Presbyteries and as well, served on several Presbytery Committees. After thirty-eight years in the Christian ministry, he retired in 1993 and took up residence in Nackawic, NB. George is survived by his wife, Beatrice (Stairs) Stratton; three daughters, Shona Stairs (Richard), Temperance Vale, Nina Murchie (Michael), Cobourg, ON and Sharon Smith (Alfred), Charleston, NB; four sisters, Elizabeth Janes (Frank), Corner Brook, NL, Amelia Howell (Wilfred), St. John's, NL, Joan Pinsent (Harold), Stephenville, NL and Patricia Wiggins (Glenn), Buckingham, Quebec; two brothers, John Stratton (Alma), Corner Brook, NL and Dawson Stratton, Toronto, ON; six grandchildren, Tanya (Scott), Veronica, Nicholas, Christina, Sabrina and Zachary; two great grandchildren, Katrina and Connor; four step-daughters, Kathy Hagerman (Darrell), Upper Queensbury, Mary Stairs, Prince William, Connie Graham (Donald), Maple Ridge and Pattie Ingraham (Mark), Temperance Vale; four step-sons, Eugene Stairs, Richard Stairs (Shona) and Dana Stairs, all of Temperance Vale and Steven Stairs (Debbie), Islandview; step-daughter-in-law, Mary Stairs, Oromocto; several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his first wife, Josephine (Earle) Stratton in 1996 and two sisters, Sadie Pinsent and infant Josephine. Visiting hours will be held at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Kirk United Church, 29 Landegger Drive, Nackawic on Friday, April 14, 2006 at 5 p.m. with Rev. Mac Campbell officiating assisted by Rev. Bob Stevens. Interment in Otis Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Eldon Gregoire, David MacLean, David MacMillan, Merlin Bradley, Bob Wilson and Paul Thornton. Active pallbearers will be Al Lanteigne, Karle Scott, Glen MacDonald, Joe Broczkowski, Percy Jones and Jim Corning.
