REV. GEORGE LLEWELLYN CROWTHER

CROWTHER, REV. GEORGE LLEWELLYN Rev. George Llewellyn Crowther of Fredericton passed away April 14, 2006 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital after a brief illness. Born on March 13, 1917 in Singapore, Malaysian States, he was the son of the late Cecil and Sarah (Gray) Crowther. He is survived by his wife Crystal Alison (Pease) Crowther and four sons: Michael (Joan) of Fredericton, Gregory of Fredericton, Gary (Priscilla) of Halifax, and Peter (Sharon) of Mouth of Keswick; two brothers: Ralph (Betty) of Vineland Station, Ontario, Archdeacon (Rev.) Thomas (Patricia) of Bathurst, and a sister: Mabel (Arthur) Taylor of Sillikers. Rev. Crowther survived by nine 9 grandchildren: Mark, Darren, Kara, Leanne, Nicholas, Ryan, Aaron, Brandon and Justin; and six great grandchildren: Colin, Lauren, Brianne, Katelyn, Sophia and Charles. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his first wife, Pearl Iris (Clapham) Crowther in 1985; three brothers: Richard (Edna), Edward (Lillian)and Lionel; and two sisters: Laura (Hubert) Drillen and Violet. The Crowther family moved from Singapore to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to England and finally to Canada arriving on May 5, 1929 where they established themselves on a farm at Salmon Beach, near Bathurst on the shores of Chaleur Bay. During the Second World War, George proudly served his Country with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) achieving promotion to the rank of Flight Sergeant. His exceptional marine knowledge and love for the water led to his appointment as commander of a crash boat deployed throughout the North Atlantic Coastal Regions to conduct search and rescue operations. Upon discharge in 1945, George accepted employment with the Bathurst Power and Paper Mill where he was employed for 18 years. In 1963, George answered a Divine calling and commenced study to become a Minister with the United Church of Canada. After several years of study at Mount Allison University and Pine Hill Divinity College (now known as the Atlantic School of Theology,) Rev. George Crowther graduated with his undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Theology and was ordained as a Minister in the United Church of Canada in May, 1968. For almost a half century, his ministry has brought happiness to the lives of those he served. Rev. Crowther was passionate about life and he enjoyed visiting those less fortunate, especially through personal visitation with shut-ins. Rev. Crowther served many pastorates throughout the Maritimes and Quebec at Welsford, Blackville, and New Bandon, New Brunswick; and Danville-Asbestos and Ormstown, Quebec. As a summer student, Rev. Crowther served at numerous churches throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Well into retirement, he continued performing marriages and baptisms for family and friends. His last official function being the baptisms of two of his great grand-daughters in 2003. In 2001, Reverend and Mrs. Crowther moved into Saint Anne's Court where George has enjoyed playing the organ, singing, and playing cards with his many friends. While at Saint Anne's Court, George continued his ministry as a member of Saint Paul's United Church. Service to others has been his legacy; these last few weeks has shown how a man so enchanted by life can be at peace with life's end. The Funeral Service for Rev. George Crowther will take place Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at St Paul's United Church Fredericton at 2 pm with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. If desired, donations may be given to the Fredericton Food Bank, Transition House or any charity in Lieu of Flowers. Internment will take place at Stonehaven, N.B. at a later date.
