MAUREEN E. YOUNG
YOUNG, MAUREEN E. Maureen E. Young, 74, of Fredericton, passed away after a long illness on Thursday, May 18, 2006, at her home as she wished with her family at her side. She was born in St. George's, Nfld., the daughter of James and Josephine (Kennedy) Butler. She will be deeply missed by daughters Heather Bowland (Don) of Bakersfield, Ca., and Lesley Binns (Lee) of Halifax, N.S., and son Michael of Fredericton; granddaughter Michele; brother Ronald (Gertrude); sisters Maudie Gaschel and Theresa Zeigler (Allen); and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband Earl; brothers James and William; and sisters Gladys and Edith. Maureen was a devoted servant of God, member of St. Dunstan's Parish and served on the Catholic Women's League. She was also a member of the Fredericton Botanical Garden Club, the Fredericton Historical Society, a patron of the arts and a member of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. She devoted many hours of volunteer work to her political party of choice and the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital. She was fiercely devoted to her children and granddaughter. Widowed at a young age, she found the strength to continue as a moral and spiritual role model for her children and finish raising her son through his teen years. She was an avid gardener and could often be found reading on her garden swing overlooking her beautiful backyard. She also found peace and happiness playing her piano, filling her home with beautiful music. Courage and respectfulness for others were principles by which she lived her life. Her children will remember her for her wisdom, wit, strength, generosity of spirit and unconditional love. Maureen was blessed with inner and outer beauty that was radiant even in her last days. She will be resting at Bishop's Funeral Home, Woodstock Rd., Fredericton. The funeral mass will be held at St. Dunstan's Church on Tuesday, May 23, at 12 noon with Father Jennings officiating. Interment will take place at St. Dunstan's Hermitage Cemetery, Fredericton. Arrangements are in the care of Bishop's Funeral Home, 458-1885. Maureen's children would like to thank the staff of the Oncology and Palliative Care units at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for their care. Special thanks to the Extra-Mural staff and student nurses for their outstanding compassion and expertise. They are also grateful to the many dear friends who supported Maureen and her family through this difficult time, especially Barb Bowland, Verna McCloskey and Earl Lipsett. For those wishing to send expressions of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. www.bishopsfuneralhome.com
