Dr. Alfred Thomas Bromley

Dr. Alfred Thomas Bromley died on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 86 years of age after a long struggle with heart disease and a short battle with cancer. Dr. Bromley was born in Burma September 15, 1921, the son of a British Army sergeant. He studied medicine in Madras, India and qualified as a medical doctor in 1948. During his life in medicine, Alf served as a physician in northern India (Darjeeling and the Dooars) for a tea estate company, in England and in Canada. In England, he trained as an obstetrician and gynecologist. In 1964, Dr. Bromley and his family immigrated to Canada where he practiced family medicine in Moose Jaw for 30+ years. In semi-retirement since 1992, Dr. Bromley continued to practice hypnotherapy and counselling until four weeks before his passing in Regina. Dr. Bromley was a founding member of the Community Clinic in Moose Jaw and was instrumental in pioneering Medicare in Saskatchewan. Alf married Sheila Austin in Bangalore, India in 1947. In the years that followed they moved between India, England and back to India with their three children. Alf is predeceased by his brother Ted, and his parents. He is survived by his wife Sheila of Regina, his daughters Judith (Don Noyes) of Vancouver and Pamela of Vancouver and his son Michael (Denise Kehler) of Regina. The family would like to thank the staff at the Pasqua Hospital, Palliative Care Centre, and the staff at 3E at the General Hospital for their care of Alf during the last days of his life. Also special thanks to Dr. Montbriand for his care and friendship and to Chaplain Lee Tennyson for her comfort and guidance. The family would also like to acknowledge the outpouring of kindness from former colleagues, patients and friends in the past few weeks. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Victoria Avenue Funeral Home, 2080 East Victoria Ave., Regina, SK with Rev. Jack Bridal, officiating. A Memorial Service in Moose Jaw will be arranged at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Dr. Alfred Bromley.
