VAN HULL, FLORENCE ALICE Florence Alice Van Hull of New Maryland died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at the Oromocto Public Hospital. A memorial service will be held at River Valley Funeral Services, 50 Avonlea Court, Fredericton, on Thursday, July 13 at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Brad Little officiating, visitation and reception to follow. Florence Alice Rotz was born in Wapello, Iowa, August 9, 1907, the second of eleven children of Wilhelmina Augusta (Schuetzler) Rotz and Walter Scott Rotz. She graduated from high school in Columbus Junction, Iowa, and stayed to teach for one year, before moving to the Moline area with her sister Anna. In 1928, she married Earl Joseph Van Hull, the love of her life, and worked at Strombeck's until they began their family in 1941. Florence cared for her family and volunteered her help in many activities at schools, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, DeMolay, and the First Congregational Church of Moline. She was well known for her cooking and baking skills, and her gardens were beautiful. After Earl's death in 1964, she returned to work part time. In 1989 she moved to New Brunswick to be near her daughter and her young family, no small task for a woman of 82. She set up housekeeping in her own apartment and happily became the cookie baker for another generation. She joined the First Congregational Church of Fredericton, and will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered. Florence is survived by her daughter Susan, her husband Larry Simpson, and granddaughters Kathryn (Brooks Chisholm) and Elizabeth; by granddaughter Jane (Kevin Gillies and sons Colin and Heath) and grandson Drew (Sharon and children Grace, Sterling and Laughlin), all of New Brunswick. She is also survived by her son Alan, his wife Alma, and granddaughters Andrea (Ray Moore and son Evan) and Alicia (Jarrod Williamson and daughter Natalie), all of Tennessee and Georgia; and by her sister Darlene Burkeybile, sister-in-law Dorothy Rotz, and numerous nieces and nephews in Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Congregational Church of Fredericton, Grace House, Fredericton Food Bank, Community Kitchen or Fredericton Emergency Shelter would be appreciated.
