WALTER JOHN MCKELL

MCKELL, WALTER JOHN Walter John McKell of Grafton died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 20, 2006 surrounded by his family and his favourite dog, Maggie. Born on December 14, 1935 at the McKell family farm in Riverfield, Quebec, Walter grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. He came to New Brunswick to attend Teacher's College where he received his Bachelor of Teaching (Certificate Four). After a few years of teaching in New Brunswick, Walter changed careers, became a licensed mechanic, and opened the Trail and Garden Shop in Grafton, which he owned and operated until his retirement. Walter also had a special fondness for dogs, and with his wife, opened the Kelmgrove Boarding Kennel. In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, Walter was a long time member of the Woodstock Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed travelling in Europe and across North America, and had many diverse interests which included the construction of a garden railroad, wood carving, operating an electric car, military history, alternative energy sources, and local transportation. Walter was proud of his Scottish heritage and had a keen interest in family genealogy. Besides these interests, Walter enjoyed gardening and could often be found in his high bush blueberry patch every August. A loving husband, father, and brother, he is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Joan (Mutch) McKell; his two sons, Kevin McKell of Woodstock and Mark McKell of Fredericton; his daughter, Carmen (Garfield) McKell of Douglas; a sister, Heather (Wesley) Larocque of Glen Sutton, QC, and a brother, George McKell of Ormstown, QC; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Woodstock Wesleyan Church on Sunday, July 23, 2006 beginning at 2:00 PM. The funeral service will be held on Sunday at 3:00 PM. A reception will follow in the Church gymnasium. Interment, for family members, will take place at the Woodstock Rural Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to any charity of the donor's choice.
