POBIHUSHCHY, SIDNEY ISIDORE On Thursday, November 23, 2006, Sidney Isidore Pobihushchy, age 74, passed away peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Sidney was born in 1932 in Runnymede, Saskatchewan, and was the son of the late Stephan and Josephine (Mysco) Pobihushchy. Sidney dedicated his life to promoting the co-operative movement. He was a past-president of both Co-op Atlantic and Fredericton Direct Charge Co-op and actively served on several other co-operative boards of directors nationally and internationally. He was a professor of political science at UNB for 27 years, retiring in 1995. Sidney was also a advocate for the rights of aboriginal people. Along with his wife Joy, he is survived by his 4 daughters and 1 son Paula, (Charlie) of Fredericton, Leah (Denis) of Moncton, Patricia (Mark) of Springdale, Newfoundland, Andrea (Darren) of Fredericton and Christopher of Moncton; as well as 12 grandchildren; 1 sister, Victoria of Hamilton, Ontario; 3 brothers, Larry (Freda) of Regina, Saskatchewan, Victor (Doris) of Red Deer, Alberta and Joseph of Peace River, Alberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sidney was predeceased by 3 sisters, Olive, Helene and Anne; as well as two brothers, Phillip and Nick. Sidney's family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Stephen Pond, Alice and all of the nurses and staff of 3SW and CCU - especially Pam, Linda and Todd who were with him at the end. Sidney cherished his family and community, and he touched the lives of literally thousands. A celebration of the life of this unique and exceptionally talented man will be held at St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 12 noon with Father John Jennings officiating. A reception will follow at the Monsignor Boyd Family Center. Honorary pallbearers will be Sheldon Palk, Stephen Dutcher, Tom Webb, Garry Allen, Rob Boyle, Ed Hanscombe and Darryl Nicholas. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sidney Pobihushchy may be made to the Master of Management - Co-operatives and Credit Unions Bursary Fund at Saint Mary's University through York Credit Union in Fredericton.
