DIANA DULCIE (WAKEFORD) PALMER
PALMER, DIANA DULCIE (WAKEFORD) The death of Diana D. Palmer of Fredericton, NB, occurred peacefully at home with her family on Wednesday, February 7th, 2007. Born in 1934, the daughter of Dulcie Margaret West and Allen William Wakeford, OBE, both of London, England. Diana's parents emigrated to Havana, Cuba in 1931 where Mr. Wakeford was employed as a manufacturer's agent. Mr. Wakeford was self-educated and taught himself Spanish to qualify for the posting to Cuba. He was an avowed socialist and agnostic, skilled in debating. Mrs. Wakeford was a teacher of English literature in both England and Havana. An ardent Anglican, she was also an avid golfer and tennis player. Diana started school in Havana and continued her education at Havergal College in Toronto. Upon completion, she enrolled in the Nursing School at Hamilton General Hospital, earning her RN designation in 1955. Diana married Dr. Marven Fraser Palmer of Douglas Harbour in 1955 in Havana. They returned to Canada where Diana worked at both the Royal Victoria and Montreal General hospitals. Diana's first two children, Alanna and Robert, were born in Montreal. Diana and her family relocated to Fredericton in 1960, where her third child, Alisa, was born. She returned to the workforce in 1979 and was her husband's Office Manager and Nurse Receptionist for fifteen years, until their retirement in 1994. Diana's community work centered around her children and she served as District Commissioner of the Fredericton Pony Club. She was also a devoted volunteer for, and valued confidante of, Premier Richard Hatfield. The family attended St. Paul's United Church, but Diana remained an Anglican. Predeceased by her parents, Diana is survived by her husband, Marven; her daughter, Alanna and her children, Phillip and David, and their father, Dan Deap; her son Robert and his children, Jacob and Danielle, and his step-children, Alexander and Marieke, and their mother, Willi Broeren; and her daughter, Alisa and daughter-in-law Ann-Marie MacDonald and their children, Isabel and Lora; and by her cousins, Michelle Gold and David Charkham, both of London. Visitation will be held at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Sunday, February 11th, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Monday, February 12th, 2007 at 2:00 pm. Bishop William Hockin will officiate.
