Mrs. Ellen Closs

Mrs. Ellen Closs of Moose Jaw passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008. Ellen was born in Barron, Wisconsin in 1910, the second of four children, and as the only girl, fondly remembered being "Dad's girl". She attended school in Bateman and Assiniboia. In 1930, she married Chet Closs and in 1949 moved to Moose Jaw. Ellen recalled watching Chet pitch and listening to him play the fiddle at dances - she loved to dance. Together they had three children. Ellen was an excellent cook, she worked as a baker for the CP Railway in the 1950's for both the formal dining hall and the passenger trains. She also baked for the Harwood Hotel and cooked for the Uptown Restaurant. As well, she worked alongside her husband at Woolworth's and Slade Apartments as a cleaner. Ellen was an avid sports fan and loved to play and watch many sports. She enjoyed curling, golfing, darts and shuffleboard and took great pride in watching her children and grandchildren play sports as well. Predeceased by her parents, William and Mabel Blair, her husband, Chet, son, Marvin; three brothers: Court, Ken and Clendon and granddaughter, Megan Closs, Ellen will be lovingly remembered by her children: Connie (Tom) Maloney of Fort Qu'Appelle, SK and Greg (Diane) Closs of Massey, ON; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren as well as many other relatives and their families. A Memorial Tea in honour of Ellen will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 2-4p.m. at the W. J. Jones & Son Family Centre, 262 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw.
