MCLEOD, ROBERT S. The death of Robert S. McLeod of Hampton, husband of Annie (Waterston) McLeod occurred September 23, 2007 at Saint John Regional Hospital. He was born in Penobsquis, January 3, 1920, son of the late John W. and Nina (Morton) McLeod. He received a Beaverbrook Scholarship to attend UNB and graduated in 1941 with first class honours in Math and Chemistry. He was a veteran of WWII serving overseas with 8th Princess Louise (NB) Hussars. Following the war Bob served in the Militia, retiring in 1957 as Lieutenant Colonel. He then worked for Veterans Land Administration retiring as Director of the Atlantic District in 1975. Bob was a member of 8th Canadian Hussars, Hampton Branch 28, Royal Canadian Legion, Byng Boys Club, and Board of Governors of NB - PEI Division of Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. Bob's active community leadership in the Town of Hampton began 50 years ago when he and his family first moved to the area. He has contributed as both president and honourary president of the Hampton Community Club, was instrumental in the construction and operation of the original community swimming pool and in the coordination of several annual Community Club auctions. He has served as an executive member on many committees of the Hampton Branch #28 - Royal Canadian Legion and on the Board of Directors of organizations including the Hampton Community Centre and Senior's Resource Centre. Involvement with organizations including the Canadian Cancer Society, the Red Cross Meals on Wheels and the Hampton Food Basket led to the Chamber of Commerce awarding him Hampton's 'Citizen of the Year' in 1982. As an active member of the Hampton United Church he spent many years as Treasurer and member of the Unified Board. Bob has received a Certificate of Merit from the Royal Canadian Legion, Hampton Rotary Club Appreciation Award; 125th Canadian Anniversary medal and the Golden Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth II. The military played a very important role in Bob's life. He served overseas from 1941-45 with the 8th Canadian 5th Armoured division in England, North Africa and Italy and Princess Louise's Hussars in Holland. He was discharged with the rank of Major and decorated with the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, C.V.S.M. and clasp, Victory Medal and Efficiency Decoration. He continued his military association as Commanding Officer of the 8th Hussars Militia Regiment (1954-57); Honourary Lieutenant Colonel, 8th Hussars Regiment (1989-92); Editor of the 8th Hussars newsletter, the Sabretache and Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps Association. He authored the book Autobiography of Princess Louise I which tells the true story of the foal who became the regimental mascot of the 8th Hussars. He was a member of the 8th Hussars Regimental Council and in August 2006 was awarded a singular honour when he was conferred the status of President Emeritus of the Association of 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's). Bob's lifelong dedication to his community and country serves as an example for his children and grandchildren, one in which they take tremendous pride. Bob is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Ann, two sons, John G.F. McLeod (Carol), Okotoks, AB, Robert A. McLeod (Rosemary), Okotoks, AB; five daughters, Anne McNeil (Leonard), Bedford, NS, Beth Brown (Rick), Hampton, Jane Corey (Lee), Rothesay and New Maryland, Gail MacKinnon (Graeme), Hampton, Barbara Gates (Allison), Hampton; twenty one grandchildren, three great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, George and two sisters, Ruth Smith and Helen Steeves. The funeral will be held Thursday, September 27 at 1:00 pm at Hampton United Church. Visitation Tuesday from 7 - 9 pm and Wednesday, 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm at Reid's Funeral Home (832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton. Legion service 6:30 Wednesday.
