DR HORACE HAROLD JACOBSON

JACOBSON, DR HORACE HAROLD The death of Dr. Horace H. Jacobson occurred at Great Oaks Special Care Home, Wickham, New Brunswick, on Thursday, January 3, 2008. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, he was the last surviving son of the late Harry and Ida (Selick) Jacobson. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Laura, who died in the spring of 1997. He was 86 years of age at death. He graduated from Saint John High School, NB; the University of New Brunswick; Dalhousie Medical School and later held a country practice at Hatfield Point, Kings County, NB. He and his young family traveled to London, England where he studied at the Royal College of Surgeons followed by the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed residency in Urology at Guthrie Clinic- Robert Packer Hospital and joined the clinic staff. After Dr. Guthrie's death, he joined the staff of Tioga General in Waverly and Towanda Memorial Hospital. In 1972 he re-joined the Guthrie Clinic after completing residency in radiology, succeeding Dr. Jim Carpenter, in the section of radiation therapy until his retirement, in 1983. He was Assistant Professor of Radiation Therapy at Hahnaman Medical School in Philadelphia. He was sports physician for Athens High School, and Secretary and Treasurer of Athens Little League, Public Health Director for Athens Borough and Director of Civil Defense (medical) for Bradford County. During the Cuban Missile Crisis he was responsible for a 100-bed hospital which was stored in Athens. He was a founder and first president of Sayre House Inc. Survived by one sister, Mrs. Helen Budd of Kitchener, Ontario; three sons, Matthew of Mt. Kisco, New York, James, Marion, PA, and Andrew, Cambridge-Narrows, NB; one grandson, Adam, of Mt. Kisco, NY; sister-in-law, Jean Young of Fredericton, NB; and dear and faithful Arthur Jones' family of Cambridge, NB; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife Laura and brother-in-law Albert Ferris. He had and worked a farm in Queens County, New Brunswick during his retirement using enlivened rock powders to restore and maintain soil fertility. He dearly appreciated the working people of the valley with whom he hunted and fished and who taught him much. Cremation will be followed by a memorial service in the spring and burial in the family plot in Bayview Cemetery, Hatfield Point, NB. The family has requested no visiting hours or floral arrangements. Memorials may be made to charities of choice.
