MARY MARGUERITE HUGHES
HUGHES, MARY MARGUERITE The death of Mary Marguerite (Conklin) Hughes, wife of Edward L. Hughes, occurred on March 18, 2008 at York Manor Nursing Home. She was a daughter of the late William H. and Annie Maria (Price) Conklin, she was born at Delisle, Saskatchewan on June 5, 1916 and received most of her education in Saskatoon where she took her stenographer training after graduating from High School. The family moved to Toronto in 1940 where Marguerite worked for Rogers Coal Company, later she was employed with the Department of Health and Welfare for the Ontario Government. She met her future husband in Toronto when he was studying at the Forestry School, University of Toronto. She married Edward Hughes in 1948 and they lived in the Toronto area until 1956 when the family all moved to Fredericton where her husband had taken a position with the Canadian Forestry Service. The family attended the Nashwaaksis United Church and Marguerite was active in women's groups, at first in the Women's Missionary Society and later in the Afternoon Unit of the United Church Women. After suffering a stroke in 1985, she was cared for at home until 1999, when she became a resident of York Manor Nursing Home. While there she actively participated in the art club, enjoyed socializing and meeting new friends. Marguerite was loved by all who knew her. Marguerite was predeceased by her parents; twin brother and sister in infancy; and her brother, Maurice Conklin of Toronto. She is survived by her husband of 59 years and by two sons, Paul of Vancouver, BC and Morley of Hamilton, ON; daughter, Vivian (Jerome Wilcox) of Fredericton; sister, Ruth MacKendrick of Sidney, BC; three grandsons, Christopher (Kayla) of Fredericton, NB, Jason Wilcox of Calgary, AB and Klye Wilcox of Fredericton, NB. Although there will be no visitation by request a Funeral Service will be held from York Funeral Home's T. Gordon MacLeod Memorial Chapel, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 2 pm with Rev. Gil MacKenzie officiating and Rev. George Feenstra assisting. Interment will take place in Sunny Bank Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances made to the charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
