Mrs. Joyce Gwendolyne Monkhouse of #401, 1825 McKercher Drive (McClure Place), Saskatoon, Sk. passed away in St. Paul's Hospital on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at the age of 89 years. Born at Eyebrow, Sask. Nov. 27, 1919, the daughter of Edwin and Myrtle Norris, she was raised on a farm in the Eyebrow area. Joyce married Thomas Sydney Monkhouse in the St. Andrew's United Church Manse, Moose Jaw, Sask. on June 19, 1943. Syd had joined the RCAF in 1942 and was stationed in Calgary. He was demobilized in 1945 and they returned to the Monkhouse family farm near Eyebrow where they lived until Syd rejoined the Air Force in 1951. They lived at a number of locations in Canada until Syd retired from the Air Force in 1966 and they moved to Saskatoon. Joyce loved gardening and had a large garden on their veterans' lot in Montgomery Place. She loved her Basenji dogs and was active in the Saskatoon Dog Club. She spent several years as a volunteer at Sherbrooke Veterans Village. Predeceased by her husband Thomas Sydney on October 8, 1984 she is survived by a brother Lawrence (Olga "Jo") Norris, Calgary, AB; nephew Ken (Anne) Norris and children Amanda and Jillian; brother-in-law Frank (Doris) Monkhouse of Kelowna, B.C.; nieces Marcia Redford and Gayle Whitman; nephews Bryan Monkhouse, Alan Monkhouse and Tom Wheeler. A Memorial Service will be held at McClure United Church, 4025 Taylor St. E, Saskatoon, Sk. on January 7, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Cremation has occurred, and a private interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Donations in memory may go to the Companion Animal Health and Research Fund, c/o Western College of Veterinary Medicine, U of S, or to the charity of your choice.
