MCHARG, GERTRUDE It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Gertrude (White) McHarg of Burton NB on July 2nd 2008 at the Oromocto Public Hospital. Born in Stephenville, NL on January 6th, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Margaret (Cormier) White. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Glendon; son, Terry; brother, Gervis White; sisters, Avia Moran and Bernice Kelly; brothers-in-law, Jack Evans, Raymond Kelly, Guy McHarg, William McHarg, Jack Landry and son-in-law Donald Bailey. Gertrude is survived by her daughters, Dawn Bailey of Lincoln and Bonita DeLucry (William) of Oromocto; sons, Wayne McHarg (Linda Walton) of Oromocto and Glendon McHarg Jr. of Burton; grandchildren, Sue Merrithew (Ronald), Robin Lirette (Allan), Kelly Morton (Gary), Sherri Elms (Bradley), Darren McHarg (Sharla), Tracy McHarg (Rick Sanders), Dean DeLucry (Susan), Dale DeLucry, David DeLucry and David Hicks(Melissa); eight great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother-in-law, Ronald Morin; sisters-in-law, Alice White and Nancy Landry and several nieces and nephews. Gertrude grew up in Saint John, NB. In 1954 the army sent her and Glen to Fredericton for four years before moving to Oromocto, then Burton where she lived until her death. In her younger days she worked at the diner in the former Oromocto Bowling Alley where she became famous for making the "Best Coleslaw in town." One of her regular customers loved it so much that he married her daughter! Later she was employed at CFB Gagetown where she served over 500 soldiers their every meal. Salads were her specialty and she was given the distinction of the "Salad Queen" of the kitchens. Gertrude loved knitting and crocheting and made some of the prettiest hats, scarves, mittens and socks. Those around her were the beneficiaries of her skill and generosity. Each year at Christmas, her grandchildren were the lucky recipients of her latest creations. Once, while recovering from surgery, she crocheted a lovely bedspread, which was proudly displayed on the empty bed next to her. A special nurse received it as a thank you for the wonderful care given during her hospitalization. Wherever there was a Bingo game, Gertrude could be found. She made many wonderful friends over the years and all will remember her prowess with a bingo dabber and a seemingly impossible number of cards. When outside the bingo hall, she could often be found at the Oromocto Mall, chatting to friends and often taking over an hour to "socialize" her way from one end to the other. Gertrude had unconditional love for all of her children. Loving her was easy, missing her will be hard. There will be no service by request. Friends are invited to gather with her family to remember her at the Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home on Saturday, July 5, 2008 from 2 to 4 PM. A private interment will take place at the Oromocto Pioneer Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oromocto SPCA or the charity of the donor's choice.
