SIGNA MARGARETT CHRISTENSEN

CHRISTENSEN, SIGNA MARGARETT Signa Margarett Christensen, 86, passed away peacefully at Hotel Dieu Hospital, July 5, 2008. Signa was one of 13 children born to Alton Oakes and Lucinda (Shorey) Oakes of California Settlement. Although a brilliant student, Signa's formal education was cut short with the death of her mother leaving behind several younger siblings including a 6 month-old baby. Hard work became her constant companion. Later she met and married a handsome Danish Maritime Ski Champion and RCAF Corporal from New Denmark, Earl Christensen. Prior to her marriage she was employed at the Bristol Hospital in Bristol, CT. Signa mastered anything she set her mind to and was self-taught. She was a wonderful homemaker and make meals fit for a king. She received an award for 1st place in a cooking competition. She crocheted anything from beautiful tablecloths to doilies, sweaters, or baby clothes. She hooked rugs, embroidered, quilted, sewed, made hats, refinished furniture and knit. She had an eye for detail and color as was evident when visiting her home. She kept meticulous journals some dating back to 1938. Her flower and vegetable gardens were beautiful and bountiful. Signa taught Sunday School, was Missions Secretary, and Secretary-Treasurer of her church for years. She cultivated a love for learning and took correspondence Bible Classes each winter. Musically inclined, she immersed her children in music, taking piano lessons herself at age 80. She sang in the choir and the Living Christmas Tree until she could no longer navigate the stairs. She loved her children, grandchildren, and others. Her early years were spent in Saint Thomas, Ontario, where her husband was stationed with the RCAF. Following WWll, they moved to New Denmark to begin farming and raising a family. Born to them are: Gary (Sandra) Christensen, Perth-Andover; Janet (Brian) Ingraham, Pokiok; Arlen Christensen, Woodstock; and Jolene Wall, Kenosha, Wisconsin. She loved to travel and visited Brazil where her daughter was teaching. Recently she took a bus tour to Newfoundland and had tickets booked to visit her daughter but God took her on a different voyage. She is survived by three brothers, Altie (Allison) Oakes and Vernie (Shirley) Oakes, Bristol, CT; Ellis (Grace) Oakes, California Settlement; and one sister, Elva Dixon, Tilley. Also survived by her children and grandchildren, Jarred Christensen (Roxanne), Dartmouth; Jeffery Christensen, Woodstock; Signe (Scott) Williams, Ingrid Johansen, Fredericton; Gregory and Alyssa Wall, Kenosha; and great grandson, Vincent Christensen, Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her husband, three sisters, and five brothers. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to White's Funeral Home. The wake and funeral service was held at Calvary Tabernacle in Perth-Andover with Rev. D. Ferrell and Bishop H. M. Lewis officiating. Interment was in the Hillcrest Cemetery. The family thanks Dr. David Bell and his staff for their excellent care, the clergy, Keith Carter, ambulance attendants, and pallbearers for their professionalism and support during our loss. To the nurse Erin on duty the night Mom passed, your eyes said it all--we sensed your love and compassion. To the church ladies, the reception was beautiful. Your prayers, flowers, visits, food, and donations are remembered with kindness.
