GERALD L. MATTHEWS

MATTHEWS, GERALD L. Gerald Lloyd Matthews, 81, of Toronto, and formerly of Moncton and Fredericton, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Toronto East General Hospital. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, he was the son of the late Lilla (Gordon) and Wilfred Matthews, and husband of the late Jean (Jardine) Matthews. Retired from Sears Canada, Gerald spent his working years in a variety of retail and management settings in Moncton, Fredericton and Toronto. A strong Christian with a deep commitment to the church, Gerald served in almost every volunteer office within the church, particularly at Hillside Baptist Church in Moncton and Marysville Baptist Church, Fredericton. From 2000-2008, he served as full-time night manager at Matthew House, a refugee shelter in Toronto, where he provided overnight supervision, as well as support and encouragement to refugee guests from around the world. His greatest satisfaction in recent years came from interacting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, collecting as many hugs, holding as many conversations and making as many memories as possible. Gerald is survived by his children, Wayne (Gwyn) Matthews of Brampton; Larry (Beverly) Matthews of Toronto and Carol (Gary) Chase of Fredericton; nine grandchildren, Cynthia, Vicki, Julie and Tim, Aaron and Rachel, Justin, Shauna and Kelsey; three great grandchildren, Edwin, Isabel and David; two sisters, Helen LeBlanc (Bernie) of Moncton and Linda Clark (William) of Ottawa, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Horsman, Marjorie Clark and Marion Johnson; brothers, Lee, Ralph, Layton, Fred and Glen. Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (506-858-1995), Monday, 2 to 4, 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service, Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday, March 3, 2009, 11:00 am. Reception following the service. Interment, Horsman Cemetery, Lutes Mountain.
