SMITH, BURTT MITTON The death of Burtt Mitton Smith, husband of B. Nora (Palmer) Smith of Fredericton, NB, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Thursday, March 5th, 2009. Born in Boundary Creek, NB, he was the son of the late Samuel W. and Ruth C. (Mitton) Smith. Burtt graduated from The University of New Brunswick in 1940 with a degree in Forestry. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the RCAF. He was posted to England where he met and married Nora, his wife of 67 years. After training in England, he was posted to India, where he served two and a half years. Returning to New Brunswick after the war, he was employed as a forester with the Provincial Government until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Canadian Forestry Association and was inducted into the New Brunswick Forestry Hall of Fame. He was a longtime and active member of Christ Church (Parish) Church. He was an enthusiastic golfer and was a member of the Fredericton Golf Club for many years. Burtt is survived by his wife Nora, son Roger Smith of Fredericton, two daughters, Penny Lester (William) of Calgary, AB, and Debbie Smith of Calgary, AB, and one grandson, Jeremy. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Donald Smith and Robert W. Smith, and grandson Christopher. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will take place at Christ Church (Parish) Church on Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 at 2:30 PM with Rev. Anthony Kwaw officiating. A reception will take place in the church immediately following the memorial service. For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
