FLORENCE BERYL SWAN

SWAN, FLORENCE BERYL Florence Swan was born in Oxford, Nova Scotia on May 28th, 1915 and died in Fredericton, NB on May 27th, 2009 the daughter of Mitchell A. and Alice (Hue) Swan. Her professional career, following studies at Mt. Allison University (Home Economics Teaching Certificate; Nutrition degree) and Dietetic Internship at the Saint John General Hospital, led to areas of work in government and commercial agencies in the Maritime Provinces and in Montreal and Ottawa. Post-graduate studies were taken at the University of Toronto, Columbia University New York, University of New Brunswick, Mount Saint Vincent University, and at the Pennsylvania State University where she earned the Ph.D. degree in Home Economics Education. Her work experience included market promotion and consumer consultant services with the Canada Starch Company in Montreal with the Federal Department of Agriculture and the Federal Department of Health (Nutrition Division) in Ottawa; Senior Nutritionalist with the New Brunswick Department of Health; Instructor, Teachers College in Fredericton, NB; and Associate Professor at the University of New Brunswick (Home Economics Education) in Fredericton. She retired from the Faculty of Education, UNB, in 1980 and was subsequently involved in community volunteer activities, including those at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and the Chimo Help-Line Center. Professional affiliations included memberships in the Canadian Home Economics Association (Life Member); New Brunswick Home Economic Association (Past President); Canadian and New Brunswick Dietetic Associations; NB Teachers' Association (Home Economics Council); Nutrition Society of Canada; Fredericton Branch, Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women; Fredericton Branch, Canadian Federation of University Women. Her church affiliation in Fredericton was with St. Paul's United Church where she served as a member of Presbytery for three years and a member of Session for six years. Memberships were also maintained with her home church in Oxford, NS (Trinity United). She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her sister, Marion Fraser of Halifax; brothers, Perce Swan of Oxford, NS and The Rev. Carl Swan of Somerset, England. She is survived by several nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and Ontario. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will take place at St. Paul's United Church on Monday, June 1st, 2009 at 2pm with Rev. H.G. MacKenzie officiating. A reception will take place in the Fraser Memorial Hall immediately following. The interment will take place in Oxford, NS. For those who wish, and in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes made to the St. Paul's United Church or Trinity United Church, Oxford, NS, would be appreciated.
