Anthony Nardocchio

Date de décès : 20 avril 2008

Sydney On Sunday, April 20, 2008, Anthony Nardocchio, husband, father, grandfather, educator, hockey buff, encyclopedia of knowledge, good friend and neighbour, slipped peacefully away to once again be with his darling wife Kathleen. Anthony, better known as Tony, was born, almost 91 years ago, in Whitney Pier, where he attended Villa Nova and Holy Redeemer schools. His family later moved to Sydney where he attended Sacred Heart School and Saint Joseph School. Tony liked to chuckle that none of the schools he attended as a student or teacher exist any more. His parents and brothers emigrated from Italy to Nova Scotia in the early 1900s. Tony was the first person from Sydney of Italian origin to graduate from university. In 1938, he graduated from St.Francis Xavier University ‘Magna Cum Laude.’ Recently his family presented him with an ‘X’ ring, today’s visible acknowledgement of academic status. He married Kathleen three years after graduation, on July 14, 1941. Tony’s 40 year career as teacher and administrator is legendary. He began as a grade 9 boys’ teacher at St. Joseph’s School, later became vice principal, and then moved to the new Sheriff Junior High as its principal. He taught all subjects, but he is most famous for his Latin lessons. Even today, his former students often entertain with a recital of Latin declensions and pronouns. Although he was busy raising a family of three girls, Tony still found time to be the founding and only president of the Sydney Rotary Common School Hockey League for the 28 years of its existence. He was also teacher and administrator of adult evening language classes for immigrants at Sydney Academy, and administrator of the provincial examinations written at Sydney Academy. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Kathleen and his daughter, Elaine, and brothers, John and Dominic. He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Ross, Oakville, and Patricia Barrington, Halifax; grandchildren, Tracy, Ottawa, Nadine, Musquodoboit Harbour, Lindsey, Calgary, Gavin, London, England, Tamara, Porter’s Lake, and Blair, Montreal. Tony’s keen intelligence, sharp and ready wit, and extraordinary memory propelled him to leadership roles throughout his life. His legacy is the thousands of men and women who he helped prepare to conquer life’s challenges. Visitation for the late Mr. Nardocchio will take place Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Second Level. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Online condolences may be sent to twcurryparkviewchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. He will be missed!
