LESLIE A. KNIGHT

KNIGHT, LESLIE A. Leslie A. Knight, 97, of the Village of Gagetown, NB, passed away on July 5th, 2009. Les was born in the Town of Bronte, ON, on August 11th, 1911 to the late William and Ellen Knight of Toronto. He attended Caledonia Public and High School and went on to attend the Provincial Normal School in Toronto where he received his teaching license for Ontario Schools. Upon graduating he taught at the Six Nations Indian Reservation near Brantford, ON, for four years. On September 27th, 1939 he was united in marriage to Bessie Reta McKeen of Devon, NB, in the Devon United Church. They lived most of their married life in Timmins, ON, and Gagetown, NB. He was predeceased by his wife Reta, who resided for a very short time in the Orchard View Nursing Home in Gagetown, on February 16th, 2007 He taught school for a short time but because of his athletic ability in baseball he was recruited by the Hollinger mining company in Timmins to play on the company baseball team and as a result became a hard rock miner with Hollinger for 22 years, eventually becoming shift boss. He worked in the mines until 1963 when he and Reta purchased the Warrens General Store in Gagetown in 1962. They operated the store until they both retired in 1977. Leslie was the first clerk of the Village of Gagetown until he retired in 1986. He was also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He is survived by two nieces, Una Cairns and Gueld Michard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister. Visitation and funeral services for Leslie Knight will not be held at his request.
