Washabuck Catherine MacKenzie, Washabuck and Glace Bay, C.B., Cassie, as she was known, passed away at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, Thursday, April 24, 2008, following a long and full life. Born in Sydney, C.B., May 4, 1913, and the fourth oldest of a family of 10, she moved as an infant to Washabuck Bridge when her father Dan MacDougall returned to his native community. Her mother, Flora MacCormack of Lower River Inhabitants, C.B., died at Washabuck Bridge in 1928 and as a teenager, Cassie became a caretaker of her own brothers and sisters. In 1940, she married Thomas ‘Tom’ MacKenzie of Lower Washabuck and they raised their family, Florence, CND, Port Felix, James Francis (Jean), Halifax, Michael Daniel ‘Don’ (Maureen), Sydney, Patricia (Lorne) Timmerman, Glace Bay, Shirley (William) Hedd, New Glasgow, as well as James Lawrence (Camilla) MacDougall, Oromocto, N.B., whom they raised through adoption. While living in Washabuck, Cassie was an active member of Holy Rosary Mission Church. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Glace Bay in 1966 and remained there until Oct. 26, 2007. In Glace Bay she was a member of St. Anne’s Church. Her faith was very important to her, with declining health she cherished the gifts of a monthly visit from the parish priests and Mass for Shut-ins. She is survived by one older sister, Elizabeth ‘Betty’, Boston, Mass.; two sisters-in-law, Jessella (George) MacDougall, Baddeck, and Annie (Jimmey) MacKenzie, Lower Washabuck, her neighbour and best friend for many years. Cassie was predeceased by her brothers, Philip, Michael, George, Dan Hughie, Dougall, James Lawrence, two sisters, Annie May, Las Vegas, U.S.A., and Teresa, Ottawa, Ont. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Raymond Hedd, Blair and David MacKenzie, Scott and Steven Timmerman, Derek and Denise MacKenzie, Joanne MacDougall, Sandra Orban, Diane MacDougall and also by nine great-grandchildren, Breagh Hedd, Jarret and Jeremey Timmerman, Katie and Brandon MacKenzie, MacKenzie Gordon, MacKenzie and Shane Orban, Coryn Fielding. Like many others around her, she never feared hard work. Her strong and hearty laugh, a trademark that she leaves, will be remembered by many. May her soul rest with well-earned peace. Cassie’s family is extremely thankful to all the staff of the Alderwood Rest Home for their tremendous compassion, respect, dignified and loving care. Cassie was so happy in her new home. The wake will take place at Washabuck Community Centre, Lower Washabuck, Sunday, April 27 from 2-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, April 28 at Holy Rosary Church, Lower Washabuck at 11 a.m., Rev. Charles Donovan officiating. Family flowers only please. In Cassie’s memory memorial donations can be made to the Lower Washabuck Cemetery Fund, the Alderwood Rest Home Recreation Department or to a charity of choice.
