
ELSPETH ANNE SMALE
SMALE, ELSPETH ANNE Elspeth Anne Smale (neé White), of Fredericton, passed away suddenly at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, on October 22, 2009. Born in Saint John, NB, (1942) she was the daughter of the late Roderick George White and Katherine Stowe (Jamer) White. Anne was a retired employee of the Region 3 Hospital Corporation. After receiving her BSc at Mount Allison University in 1964, she began her career as a clinical dietician in 1965 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. In 1968, she received her Bed from the University of New Brunswick and started at the Oromocto Public Hospital. After 18 years as a dietician, Anne moved into hospital administration and subsequently held the positions of Administrative Director of Personnel and Support Services, Assistant and Acting Executive Director and Administrative Director of Therapeutic Services at OPH. In 1992, Anne was appointed to the Region 3 Corporate Office in Fredericton as a Special Assistant and Policy Advisor. She maintained this position until her retirement from River Valley Health in July 2005. In that time, Anne played an important part in several special projects for the region such as haemodialysis service development and corporate policy development. She was also the region accreditation coordinator for the surveys in 2001 and 2004, and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the organ and tissue donation program. Anne grew up in St. Paul's United Church, and was a member of the Oromocto United Church, where she was at one time Secretary and on the Committee of Stewards. She eventually moved into Fredericton, attending Smythe Street Cathedral, where she found great joy in the musical services and productions. She was a former member and past president of the Oromocto Rotary Club, a former member, secretary, president and director of the New Brunswick Dietetic Association, and a member of the Canadian Dietetic Association. Anne is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Katharine Smale (Gregor McEwan) of Saskatoon; her son, Steven Roderick William Smale of Fredericton; and brother, Roderick M. White (Cathy) also of Fredericton. She was the beloved Nana to grandchildren, Taylor, Kaylee, and Callum. She is fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her father, her mother and her husband, Willam Frederick Smale of Oromocto. Visitation will be held at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Monday, October 26th, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at the Symthe Street Cathedral on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Wayne Flowers will officiate. Interment will be in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery. For those who wish or in lieu of flowers, memorials in Anne's memory may be made to the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre or to World Vision Canada toward community medical supplies. The family would like to give special thanks for dear friends who provided invaluable support to Anne and her family in hospital; they would also like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at Chalmers for their excellent care and attention during Anne's brief stay.
