HOVEY, CLAUDE EDWIN 1919-2009 Claude Edwin Hovey of Geary died peacefully with family at his side on 7 December 2009 in his 90th year at the Oromocto Hospital. Born in Argyle, NB, on 10 June 1919 he was the son of the late William and Cedelia (Wilson) Hovey and beloved husband of the late Jean Rose Woodage who emigrated from London, England, as a war bride. He is survived by children Micheal (Shirley) of Grand Cache, AB, David of Port Dover, ON, Tony (Irene Martin) of Hagersville, ON, Ann VanderSar (Peter) of Mara, BC and Terry (Carol Ferguson) of Fredericton, NB; brother Gordon (Lena) of Ottawa, ON; grandsons Jason, Kyle, Jody, Ryan; two great-grandaughters: one great-grandson and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Charles and Jimmy, sisters Pauline McWaid, Isabel McWaid, Marjorie Pryor and grandson Jordan. Claude was an avid fisherman who loved to run the Miramichi River. He also enjoyed the partridge hunt at the 'family' camp in Boistown. Claude started work as a boy on his father's farm and as a teamster in the woods. At the beginning of WWII, he enlisted in the Army serving with The First Special Service Force in the Italian Campaign, where he was wounded, and later in France. After the War, Claude farmed in Williamstown, rejoined the Army and posted to Petawawa. After leaving the Army, he worked at Base Gagetown and then started his own business which he ran until he retired. Over the years Claude made many friends and business associates who will remember him for his kindness and willingness to help. Claude will be fondly remembered by friends and family who had the opportunity to 'wet a line' with him and run the river; he was the best of the Hovey clan with a pole in a canoe. The family wishes to acknowledge its gratitude for the devotion shown to Claude by his caregiver, Laurice Fendley. A special thank you to the staff at the Oromocto Hospital, Dr. Fraser and the nurses of the Duffie Wing who gave him such fine care during his last days. There will be no visitation at Claude's request. A private family interment will be held at Fernhill Cemetery in Saint John. A celebration of Claude's life will be held at a later date.
