George Edward 'Blackie' Black

Dec. 5, 1909-May 12, 2008 George Edward Black, 98, of Kings Road, Sydney, passed away Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his wife and daughter by his side. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Edwin and Emma (Boutilier) Black. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church. George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie (MacDonald) Black; his daughter, Sharon Anne Black; brother-in-law, John (Eleanor) MacDonald, Glace Bay; nephews, Keith (Leona), Bruce (Jo-Ann) MacDonald; grandnephews, Kevin, Brendan, Devin, Andrew, Ethan MacDonald, grandniece, Penney MacDonald, all of Sydney. George was the last surviving member of his family. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his sister, Frances Louisa Black, mother-in-law, Kate Ann MacDonald Goodwin, step-father-in-law, Jack Goodwin. During his lifetime, Dad worked at the Steel Plant, Sutherland’s Grocery Store and for 36 years, at Brookfield Dairy Ltd. (1939-1975). Dad was blessed with 33 years of retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing and especially his summers at the family bungalow. For 98 years he lived a good life and, in turn, provided a good life for his family. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, May 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 16 at St. Andrew’s United Church, Bentinck Street, with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in St. Luke’s United Church Cemetery, Donkin. Following the service, a reception will take place in St. Andrew’s Memorial Hall.
