Mary (Betty) Fraser
Date de décès : 18 mai 2008
Mary (Betty) Fraser passed away peacefully at Elginwood Nursing Home in Toronto on Sunday, May 18, 2008, in her 89th year. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Larder Fraser, a well known Cape Breton municipal councillor, in 1973. She was the beloved and loving mother of Elaine and Ross, and she used all her formidable strength and wit to establish them in life and then, in retirement, inspire them with her diverse cultural interests, her financial management skills and, in recent times, her tenacity in the face of chronic pain. She learned to speak French as a retirement project, painted poignant watercolours of children and ‘old faces,’ as she called her portraits of older people, and bottled classic preserves such as her famous corn relish. Earlier, as a school teacher, she inspired a generation of students at Riverview Rural High School where she taught for nearly 20 years. She had the talent of being the firm, no-nonsense teacher who truly cared, and students became devoted to her. Before retiring, she completed her university degree by taking classes part time at the University College of Cape Breton. At her request, Betty will be buried in Cape Breton next to her beloved husband, Larder. A funeral service will be held in Betty’s home town of Sydney at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Saturday, May 24 at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be sent to our webpage at www.chantfuneralhome.com.
