John 'Jack' Dawson

1934-2008 Glace Bay We, the family of Jack Dawson, regretfully announce his passing Sunday, May 25, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family, after fighting a hard battle with cancer. Born in Reserve Mines, Sept. 30, 1934, he moved to Glace Bay in 1961 and worked for C.B. Development Corp. for 29 years, working at No. 18, No. 20, No. 26 and at Phalen collieries until his retirement. Jack enjoyed fishing, hunting and his beagles, and was a member of the Airway Beagle Club. After retiring he took up his true passion ‘golf’ and was especially proud of his three holes in one as well as winning the C.B. Seniors Championship in 1995. Jack also enjoyed playing with the ‘Huff and Puff’ hockey league which he ‘retired’ from at the age of 71. Left to cherish the memories of Jack are his loving wife of 51 years, Shirley (May); daughters, Colleen (Ray Lalo), Elaine (Bernie Rizzato), Cathy (Bobby Campbell), Carolyn (Melvin Burns), all of New Waterford, Jean (Paul Farrow), Glace Bay; and his sons, Bill, Donkin, Jackie (Lisa), Florida, Bruce (Sherry), Sydney River, and Derrick, British Columbia. Jack also leaves behind his 17 grandchildren. Also surviving are Jack’s sisters, Mary Wagner, Ontario, Betty Buckley, Glace Bay, Margaret Stewart, Reserve Mines, and Dorothy (Frankie Caume), Ontario; brother, Jimmy (Velma), Reserve Mines; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Danny Morrison), Gardiner Mines, Norma (Dave Curran), Lingan Road; brothers-in-law, John (Kay May), Glace Bay, Bill (Nancy May), Ontario; and several nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents, James and Agnes, brothers, Billy (Korea) and Bruce (Ontario), parents-in-law, William and Madeline May and sister in-law, Brenda Campbell. Cremation has taken place at the family’s request with no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Thursday at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
