58, Sydney MinesIt is with deep sadness we regret to announce the passing of our mother who had a brief battle with cancer. Heather Gillis, 58, of Sydney Mines, formerly of 11 Egan St., passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of Hazel (Forrest) Gillis. She was a member of Carmen United Church, a past member of the choir and UCW. She was also involved with the Christopher Leadership Course and mostly remembered for her 30-year involvement with the Girl Guides of Canada. Family would like a special thank you to go out to Heather’s beloved aunt, uncles and cousin who provided love and comfort to her. Also to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit for taking special care of Mom and our family. A special thank you to her ‘angel’ friends who were there for Mom and family. She is survived by daughter, Jennifer Evans and her partner David Carter, who Mom felt was the son of her heart, Sydney Mines; Margaret ‘Maggie’ Evans, Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Evans, both of Hong Kong; special friend, Wayne Young; brothers J.R. (Sue) Gillis, Sackville, N.S., and Carter Gillis, Sydney Mines. Also surviving is her very special grandson, Jordan Evans, he was the apple of Nana’s eye. She was predeceased by her father, James Gillis. Memorial service will take place at a later date.
