July 20, 1969-June 8, 2008 North Sydney/Louisbourg/Grande Prairie, Alta. It is with great sadness we announce Derrick’s death due to a fatal car accident in Grande Prairie, Alta., age 38. Derrick was born and resided in North Sydney, N.S., as a child. During his young adolescent years, Derrick and his family resided in Louisbourg, N.S., where his father worked at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Derrick later moved to Northern Alberta, where Grande Prairie became his home. Derrick attended G.D. Lewis School in Louisbourg and later obtained his welding certificate at NSCC in Sydney. Derrick was a skilled tradesman, welder and entrepreneur of his own company, Caper Maintenance and later worked with A.S.K. Projects’ Ltd. He actively attended the People’s Church in Grande Prairie. His one true love always remained his son, Jayden. Derrick will be remembered for his devotion to his family and friends and his lust for life and adventure. He had a great passion for the outdoors, hockey, baseball and building go-carts. Derrick was a dog lover to the end; unfortunately the accident also took the life of his dog, his ‘best friend’ Mater. He is survived by his four-year old son, Jayden; parents, Lorne and Ethel (Delaney) Burchell; sister, Lorna (JD) Hustins; nephew, Jack Hustins; brother, Kyle (Suzin) Burchell; maternal grandmother, Beatrice Delaney; godparents, Jack Delaney (uncle) and Marie Olausson (aunt); and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 16 at the People’s Church, Grande Prairie, Alta. at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon. There will also be visitation services held Monday, June 23 at W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney, N.S., from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private burial service will be held at the Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, Tuesday, June 24. A special thanks to his friends who became ‘like family’ on the West Coast, Richard and Lynn Ferguson, Gary Parenteau, Don Hachey and Brian MacDonald. Memorial donations may be made to the People’s Church, Grande Prairie, Alta., or the charity of your choice. Our hearts ache for his presence, his soul and his free spirit and we grieve for his young son. Derrick has been taken away from us too early and now the memories of him will live on.
