Leo was born in Grass Cove, Cape Breton, on Jan. 29, 1934. He was the son of the late Michael Anthony and Mary Agnes (MacNeil) MacNeil. He graduated from Sydney Academy in 1952. Soon after his graduation, he became a proud member of the Canadian Armed Forces for which he served for 35 years, until his retirement in 1990. Upon his retirement he and his wife Ann returned to their beloved homeland of Cape Breton and resided in North Side East Bay and more recently Sydney River. He was a member of Seaview Golf and Country Club in North Sydney for many years, where he met many good friends while playing a game he loved. Everyone who knew Leo will remember him fondly for his sense of humour, wit and his decency. He was predeceased by his brothers, Lawrence and Allan, whom one of his sons was named after, and his sisters, Frances, Agnes, Jeanette and Eleanor; his stepmother, Bridget Burns MacNeil and his stepbrothers, Bill and Donald. Anyone who knew Leo will always lovingly remember him for his wonderful sense of humour and his compassion for others. He truly lived his life with dignity and respect. He was a devout Catholic all of his life and truly believed in heaven and the after life. We believe that Leo has now gone to a better place and while we will forever miss him in our lives, we also know he will be in the loving arms of God. In Leo’s later years, he was faced with health challenges which he handled with the courage and dignity that was the theme of his life. He will always be truly loved and never forgotten by his family and his friends, his life will be defined in the memory of his courage and easy going way. Rest in peace Leo, we love you.
