(Buddy) Sydney It is with sadness and regret that we announce the peaceful passing of Raymond A. Keating (Buddy) on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney on Oct., 8, 1927, he was the son of the late Raymond and Annie Beatrice (Burgey) Keating of Whitney Pier. He graduated from Sydney Academy and attended St. FX University. He retied after 40 years of service from Sydney Steel Corp., working mainly in the pensions and benefits department. Buddy was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Eileen (Gillis). He is survived by his daughter, Joe Anne (Ed Devereaux), Sydney; son, Raymond (Elaine Mason), Kitchener, Ont.; and nine grandchildren, Liam, Kelson, Breagh, Mason, Lauren, Connor, Brett, Taylor and Hailey. Also surviving are sisters, Genevieve ‘Gen’ Chisholm, Sydney, Charlotte ‘Lal’ Coleman, Baddeck, Rose Marie McGrath, Ben Eoin, and Anne (Chris) Tiller; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Buddy was a caring person who touched many lives in subtle and positive ways. He had great affection for his family and his grandchildren and was always so proud and willing to tell about their latest exploits on the basketball court, the hockey rink, dance floor or whatever they were engaged in. Through the years, he and Eileen enjoyed entertaining and openly welcomed people to their north end home at 57 Johnstone St. to share a laugh, have a drink and help themselves to anything in the fridge. He loved to play cards or sit and reminisce about old times and had a knack for remembering the details and names of people and places that the rest of us were hard pressed to recall. He took great joy and satisfaction in decorating the house for all holiday and special occasions, getting the appropriate box with all of the keepsakes and knick-knacks from over the years. He had a great wit and delighted in seeing a funny side to things that lead to a comment or expression that would always bring a smile to your face. His presence will be missed by those of us who knew him, but when that situation or special occasion arises, there will be a part of us that will know exactly what he would have been thinking. Well done, Buddy! The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Buddy’s caregivers at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Their kindness, understanding and attention to all of our needs is very much appreciated. Cremation has already taken place. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, July 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 14 at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Whitney Pier. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society, or the Diabetes Association.
