Shirley Cecilia Clarke

69, Sydney Mines It is with great sadness in our hearts, after a short battle with cancer, we announce the passing of our matriarch at the age of 69, at home, near her garden with her family by her side. Born in Sydney Mines, Shirley was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nora (O’Toole) Richards. She was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. She is survived by her loving husband Harry M. Clarke (Jr.); her cherished children, Cathy MacNeil and Frank Sentence, Ontario, Lonnie and Nancy (Campbell) MacNeil, N.S., and Michael MacNeil, N.S.; stepdaughters, Michelle Adams (Clarke), Ontario, Lisa Clarke, Ontario, and Sonya Clarke, N.S.; as well as six grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters, Edith Foster, Joan (Lawrence) Hurley, Mickey (John) Bushnick, and Verna (Cameron) MacNeil. Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Richards and her first-born son, John D. (Jack) MacNeil. In accordance with Shirley’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 10 a.m., with Fr. Hughie MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. A special thank you to Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Susan MacKenzie, and all the Palliative Care Staff, as well as the VON for all they did to make her last days with us all that they could be.
