87, Sydney/Glace Bay The family of Mary Emma Donovan regret to announce her passing into life eternal with our Heavenly Father on Monday, July 28, 2008. Emma was born in Sydney on April 4, 1921, to Mary and Isaac James Gillam and lived her early years on Forrest Street, Sydney. During the war years, she worked at a munitions factory in Toronto. She later moved back to Sydney and met and married her love, Bill. They lived and raised their family on Douglas Street. Emma worked in ladies wear at Crowell’s Department Store until retirement. She was a parishioner of Christ Church and a former member of the ladies auxiliary and the Christ Church Bowling League. Emma was an avid card player enjoying a game of tarabish, 45’s or bridge and was a member of the Cape Breton Bridge Club. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, cats and dogs and taking care of others. Besides her parents, Emma was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William ‘Bill’ and brothers, Stan, Fred and Bill. She is survived by her sons, David (Patti), Toronto, and Rodney (Madonna), Gardiner Mines; daughter, Linda (David), Kentville; and grandchildren, Darcie and Christine. Emma spent her last years at Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Glace Bay, where she always brought a smile to everyone’s face. Visitation with Emma’s family will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place at Church of Christ the King, Friday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by Emma’s family.
