78, Dominion/New Waterford Although our hearts are filled with sadness, it is with peace and joy we announce that Archie Allister ‘Gush’ Campbell, after a short battle with cancer, passed away Aug. 4, 2008, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. He is now sharing eternity with his wife, Elizabeth Ann ‘Betty’ (MacDonald) Campbell. Born in New Waterford, Allister was a son of the late Archie and Euphemia Campbell. He was the most gentle of men and was instantly loved by all who knew him and cared for him. Allister retired from Devco after a long career as payroll clerk serving many of the local collieries. Allister was an active member of Calvin United Church and over the years served as an elder and was a member of the men’s club, choir and the session. An avid sports fan, you could always find Allister watching baseball or hockey. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing rugby. He and Betty also enjoyed bowling, badminton, and shuffleboard at Calvin Hall. Allister and Betty enjoyed a loving and happy marriage of 27 years and had three wonderful boys, Brian (Joanne), New Glasgow, Sandy ‘Alex’, Halifax, and Graham (Lisa), New Waterford. Besides his three sons, Allister is survived by grandsons, Mitch and Terry, New Glasgow, Michael and his mom Beth, Halifax; and step-granddaughter, Presley, New Waterford. Also surviving are sisters, Adeline (Peter) Moulins, Phemie Smith, both of Westmount, and Margie Smith, New Waterford. Allister will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, his extended family in Dominion and many close friends. Allister was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Ann ‘Betty’ (MacDonald), brothers, Victor, Lauchie, Malcolm ‘Red’, Doug, Larry, and George, sisters, Kay Fletcher, Annie Rich, and Christina ‘Tina’ Crombie. Over the past number of years, Allister has been enjoying living near Dominion Beach, walking the boardwalk and playing crib with the boys at the Hawks Club on Saturday afternoons. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place Thursday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Allister’s remains will be taken to the church at noon Thursday.
