FRANCINE ELIZABETH HURLEY
HURLEY, FRANCINE ELIZABETH - Beloved wife of J. Edward and wonderful mother to dear children Grant and Amy, passed away peacefully at her residence in St. Andrews, NB on Monday, May 19, 2003. Born January 19th, 1956 to the late John Porteous and the late June Colwell, she is survived by brother James (Toronto) and sisters, Sandra (Halifax) and Joanne (Fredericton), and several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Francine was born in Fredericton, NB, and grew up in Mississauga, ON. She excelled in her schooling, graduated from Lorne Park High School and, after the family returned to Fredericton in 1974, earned a BBA in 1978 at UNB. Francine was employed in the financial services industry for 22 years. She also wrote several articles, freelancing for various publications. The birth of her children in 1988 and 1993 brought her the greatest of joys and with a wonderful new focus in life, Francine spent valuable time in their personal development. Francine's interest in the welfare of children went beyond her own - she volunteered at the New Maryland Elementary School and Vincent Massey Elementary School. With her conviction that the development of early reading skills was the basis of superior learning, she organized her own fundraising initiative for the purchase of badly needed children's books for the Fredericton Public Library. The diagnosis of breast cancer in 1999 brought personal challenge and change. Feeling positive about the future, the family moved to St. Andrews-by-the-Sea in 2000. Francine quickly integrated family life into a new place with her genuine interest in new relationships and energy for participation in community events. She also enjoyed her time supply teaching at Sir James Dunn Academy and exploring creative pursuits in watercolor painting, quilting and her lifelong interest in gardening. However, in late 2001, cancer returned. All who have been touched by her will remember her smile, wit, sense of humor and because of her depth of knowledge of current affairs through constant reading was always able to offer a bottom-line opinion on almost any topic. She will be remembered fondly by all who know her and leaves her mark on may of us.
