79, North Sydney It is with heartfelt sadness the family announce the sudden passing of Ivan Lambert Matthews, 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Port aux Basques, Ivan was the son of the late Ernest and Mylida (Kendall) Matthews. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and also worked there as a janitor for a period of time. For many years Ivan operated the canteen at the North Sydney Community Forum. He was a member of the Fulton Orange Lodge, North Sydney and an Honorary member of the North Sydney Fire Department and the Kinsmen Club of North Sydney. He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah (Dodge) Matthews; his daughters, Lila (Joe) Howell, Marilyn Matthews, both of North Sydney; and son, Ivan (Nadine) Matthews, also of North Sydney; his pride and joy, his five grandchildren, Rachel Arneil, Alicia and Michael Howell, Kailin and Kelsey Matthews; his sister, Mary Sheaves, North Sydney and brother, Richard (Sharon) Matthews; sister, Ernestine (Walter) Jesso, Winnipeg; his two stepsisters, Madeline (Banks) MacLean, North Sydney, and Gloria (Ray) Rolfe, Sydney; stepbrother, Garland Lily, Sydney and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon Matthews, sister-in-law, Claretta Matthews, brother-in-law, Eric Sheaves and stepmother, Alice Lily Matthews. Visitation for Ivan will be held Sunday, Aug. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
