REVEREND DR. JOHN GEORGE RUSSELL

RUSSELL, REVEREND DR. JOHN GEORGE, BA, BD - 95, passed away in Halifax on June 29, 2003. Born in Stellarton, NS. Son of James and Jessie (Sparks) Russell. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Allison University in 1931. He did post graduate studies in Edinburgh University, Scotland, and received a Bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1964. In 1967 he received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Mount Allison University. Dr. Russell served in the following Maritime Conference pastoral charges of the United Church of Canada: Sherbrooke, Dartmouth, Glace Bay, Westville, NS, Sackville and Saint John NB. He held the following church related offices- Chairman of Sydney, Moncton, and Saint John Presbyteries, Treasurer of Maritime Conference, President of Maritime Conference, Commissioner to General Council of United Church of Canada. He was founding member, secretary and committee chairman for the Tantramar Residences, Sackville NB, Regent of Mount Allison University, member of the Senate of Pine Hill Divinity Hall. He retired in 1973 after forty years of active ministry. During the course of his retirement he supplied in Bermuda at Grace-Cobb's Hill, Wesly Methodist, Somerset and Emmanuel. He also supplied in charges in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He was predeceased by his wife Jeanette Sutherland, sister Lillian and brother William. He is survived by his daughter Georgette (Alan) Britten Halifax, NS and son James (Noreen) Russell, Saint John NB. Sister Jessie, brothers, James (Bud), Ralph, and Robert. Grandchildren, Kevin, Robert, Kathryn, Heather, Jacqui, Stephen and great grandson Matthew. Visitation 7 to 9 pm Wednesday July 2, 2003 at Snows Funeral Home, Halifax. Funeral Saint Andrews United Church, Robie St. Halifax on Thursday, July 3 at 1:30. Reverend Stanley MacQueen officating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Trenton NS at 5:30 pm Thursday. Family flowers only, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stephen Russell Memorial Cystic Fibrosis Fund, 6 Lynwood Drive, Halifax NS, B3M 1Y7 or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, NS Branch, Halifax, NS.
