BATEMAN, HELEN L. - 1934-2003 Helen L. Bateman, of Shediac Cape, died peacefully at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Regional Hospital on Thursday, July 24, 2003, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Daughter of the late Allison and Mary (Murray) Mundle. Born on July 15, 1934 and raised in Mundleville, Kent County. Beloved wife of James E. Bateman and devoted mother to Elaine of Rothesay, Leigh (Christine Charbonneau) of Québec City, QC, Allison (Stephen Leavitt) of Fredericton, and Glenn of Shediac. Adored Grammie to Darcy, Liam and Louis-Philippe, "Bee-Bee" to granddaughter Emily Helen. Sadly missed by sisters, Ruth Carruthers of Chapel Point, NB, Alice Richard of Richibucto and Lois Richards of Airdrie, AB and special cousin Anne Eagles of Toronto, ON. Predeceased by infant children Helen Mary and James Garth and by a sister, Elaine, in 1947. Helen graduated from the Provincial Normal School and took her first job at the one-room school at Dorchester Road. She was a life-long teacher and student. Later she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education at the Université de Moncton and her Master of Arts at UNB Fredericton. Helen dedicated herself to her family, friends and community. She put her ideals into action and invested her energy in many community service organizations. Her many roles included being a Brown Owl, a literacy tutor, an involved member of the United Church of Canada, a board member at Camp Tawasi and a Sunday School teacher. She was a founder and co-ordinator of Hospice Shediac. Through this volunteer work, she touched the hearts of over 400 families. In 1998, she was given the Canadian Palliative Care Association's Award of Excellence. She was a generous cook and famous for her bread and rolls. She loved bird-watching, nature walks and her aerobics class. She loved gardening, literature and travel with her friends. The family will receive relatives and friends Saturday, July 26, 2003 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Frenette Funeral Home Ltd., 396 Main St., Shediac (532-3297). The funeral service will be held Sunday, July 27, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Church, Shediac with Rev. Claudia Keller officiating. Donations in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice Shediac, Dr. Georges L.
