Catherine Mildred MacNeil
Date de décès : 24 août 2008
It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of our mother who passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 24 in Victoria County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Columba parish, Iona, and of Sacred Heart Mission, McKinnon’s Harbour. Mildred was the last surviving member of her Gillis family, having been predeceased by her parents Hugh N and Mary Lucy Gillis and siblings, Wilfred, Fr. John Hugh, Fr. Marcy, Fr. Lex, Sr. Mary, Rose and John Y. She was also predeceased by her husband, Willy ‘Dan Y’ and her infant son, Alphonsus. In her early days, Mildred worked as a station master for the CNR, work she loved but not less than her love of Celtic music and a good joke. She is survived by her children, Theresa, Dartmouth, Lily Gillis (Jimmie), Tantallon, Mel (Cathy), Sydney, Leonarda, Antigonish, and Gillis, at home; 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Carolyn and Allison MacNeil, Jennifer, Janine, Angeline, John Hugh, Jacinta and Stephanie Gillis and Jeffrey and Caitlyn MacKinnon. Francis MacKinnon was always a fondly remembered son-in-law. Our gratitude is extended to Fr. Ray Huntley, St. Columba parish and to her special nephew, Fr. Hughie MacNeil, Immaculate Conception and St. Pius X parishes, Sydney Mines, who was always so kind to her. Mildred was able to live her full life in the family home that she created, due in no small way to the kind and compassionate care provided by Lucina Redden, caregiver, and the faithful companionship of Beejee (’Woosus’). Our appreciation also to Dr. Hobbs, Sydney, Dr. Genge and the staff of Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck. Visitation will be at the parish hall Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Columba parish, Thursday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Columba parish.
