MacMURRAY, JAMES ALEXANDER, C.M., LL.D - Life time Saint John, N.B. resident and well known businessman James A. MacMurray, 78 passed away peacefully at his Pelton Road home, Monday, August 18, 2003 after a period of failing health. Mr. MacMurray was first and foremost a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years Jean (Palfrey). He will be sadly missed by his daughters Ann (Ronald Cox), Bloomfield, NB and Barbara (Peter Golding), Toronto and his three grandsons Douglas Cox, Kyle and Ross Golding. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Wallace P. and Norma MacMurray, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. MacMurray was predeceased by his parents James and Ann (Peebles) MacMurray and his sisters Joan Bush and Barbara Brown. Mr. MacMurray was educated in local schools graduating from Saint John High School. He attended Mount Allison University prior to serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Mr. MacMurray's business career began in the late 1940's. He became president of Eastern Securities Co. Limited in 1950, a post he held until merging with Richardson's Securities of Canada in 1968. Mr. MacMurray was also president and chairman of MRA Holdings Ltd., Maritime Beverages Ltd. and Fundy Cable Ltd. for many years. He retired in 1999 as Chairman of the Board of Fundy Cable Ltd. Throughout his business career Mr. MacMurray served as director of Bank of Canada, Bruncor Inc., Brunswick Mining and Smelting, Empire Co. Ltd., The New Brunswick Telephone Company Ltd., Sumner Co. Ltd., and Wandlyn Motels Ltd. He also served as vice president of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada and was a member of the advisory committee of Montreal Trust Co. In 1998 Mr. MacMurray was honoured to be inducted as a member of the Order of Canada (C.M.). He also received honourary Doctor of Law degrees from the University of New Brunswick in 1985 and Mount Allison University in 2000. He was the first recipient of the Saint John YM-YWCA Red Triangle Award in 1990, received the Commemerative Medal on the 125th. anniversary of the Confederation of Canada in 1995 and was inducted into the New Brunswick Hall of Fame in 1998. Mr. MacMurray was a strong believer and supporter of his community and served tirelessly over his 50 year career for many volunteer organizations including the YMCA and the United Way of Greater Saint John serving as chairman in 1964. He was co-chair of the Friends of the Games campaign which raised $2.5 million for the 1985 Jeux Canada Games. He has also served on the boards of the Imperial Theatre Foundation, Lahey Clinic Canadian Foundation, the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation and the Saint John Canada Games Foundation. Mr. MacMurray was chairman and director of the Hugh H. MacKay- James A. MacMurray Foundation and founder, chairman and director of The MacMurray Foundation. Mr. MacMurray was a member of the Church of St. Andrew and St. David. He enjoyed his many friends and was involved as an active member of Parrtown Club, Riverside Country Club and the Union Club. He was also a member of the Delray Beach Club and the Delray Dunes Golf and Country Club, Delray Beach, Florida. Resting at Brenans Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Church of St. Andrew and St. David, Germanin Street, Saint John, NB on Friday, August 22, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Private family interment will follow at Fernhill Cemetery.
