Simon 'Lizzie' MacKinnon
84, Bay St. Lawrence It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our father, Simon (or Pappy as we all affectionately called him) after a brief but harrowing illness in Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil's Harbour, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Black Point, Victoria Co., he was the son of the late Peter A. and Elizabeth (MacEachern) MacKinnon. He was a fisherman for most of his life, lobster, Danish seine, and one of the first to hold a snow-crab licence in Bay St. Lawrence. After his retirement, he found great joy adding pieces to his birdfeeder and feeding and watching the birds. Although he had a very limited education, he took great interest in world politics and kept us up-to-date on what was happening with our soldiers in Afghanistan along with the current presidential election in the USA. He hoped that the new president would soon bring the troops back home, where he believed they belonged. Daddy was a very quiet man with a wonderful sense of humour who could say a lot in very few words. Leaving behind to remember all his jokes and funny sayings is his wife of 62 years, Cassie (MacLellan); sons, John Roy, Sugarloaf, Paul (Debbie), Hamilton, Ont., Lloyd (Gail), Bay Rd. Valley; daughters, Betty, North Sydney, Helen (Andre), St. Margaret's Village, Mary Jane (Greg), Bay St. Lawrence, Jessie (Joe), Bay Rd. Valley and daughter-in-law, Frances, Bay St. Lawrence. Also a special granddaughter whom he raised as his own, Tammy (Charlie), North Carolina; other grandchildren, Karen, Nicole, Trina, Shawn, Marisa, Lisa, Daniel, Travis, Angela, Stacy, and Joel; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Rebecca, Brice, Ashton, Sophia, and Cassie Emma. Also by his brother, Allan Joseph; sisters, Florence and Margaret and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons, Peter in infancy and Hector; sons-in-law, Wilson and Earl and grandson, Joey; sisters, Flora Ann, Mary Ann, Isabel, Margaret, Annie, Maggie, Sadie Mae, Annie Beatrice, and Marcella; brothers, Archie, Alex Dan and Alex James. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him, including his caregiver Winnie, who became more like family to him over the past year. There will be no visitation; burial to take place at a later date. Donations may be made to the Buchanan Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca.
