MURRAY FREDERICK STEWART

STEWART, MURRAY FREDERICK - The death of Dr. Murray Frederick Stewart age 87 of Fredericton, NB, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Tuesday, November 25th, 2003. Born in Taymouth, York County, NB, he was the only child of the late Frederick Roy and Laura Jane (Porter) Stewart. He retired from the University of New Brunswick in 1981 after a 45 year career as teacher, school administrator, vice-principal and principal of The New Brunswick Teacher's College, and Assistant Dean of Education in the Faculty of Education at UNB. Recognized internationally for his research in the fields of writing development and Canadian English, his studies were published in many refereed journals and as a result of this work, he was cited in The International Who's Who in Education. Following his retirement the University of New Brunswick's Board of Governors appointed him honorary research assistant in the School of Graduate Studies and Research. His Education began in Taymouth followed by boarding in Fredericton in order to attend Fredericton High School. This was followed by Provincial Normal School, the University of New Brunswick, Columbia University (New York), University of Alberta, University of London and McKinley-Roosevelt (Chicago). He served on the Senate of the University of New Brunswick and on the Executive of The New Brunswick Teachers Association. He was an active member of Wilmot United Church, Project Ploughshares, The Canadian Peace Alliance, Amnesty International, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the New Brunswick Conservation Council, the Council of Canadians, the New Brunswick Society of Retired Teachers and of the National Council of Teachers of English. Following his retirement he found more time to indulge in his love of playing Scottish folk music, writing, travel, photography and gardening. Left to cherish his memory is his loving family; his wife of 59 years Dora, daughters Sherrille (Hugh) Duplisea of Fredericton, Susan (John) Wood of Calgary, five beloved grandchildren, Mark (Shannon) Duplisea of Budapest Hungary, Heather (John Edward) Bruce of Dartmouth, NS, Leigh-Ann (John) Scott of Ajax, Ontario, John Steven (Laura) Wood and William Wood all of Calgary, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton on Friday, November 28th, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Wilmot United Church on Saturday, November 29th, 2003 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Isabel Black will officiate. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery.
