1932-2008 Glace Bay It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joseph A. Poirier, age 76, of Cottage Street, Glace Bay. Joe passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Alex and Catherine (Bourgeois) Poirier. Joe was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. He was employed at Point Edward Naval Base, Metropolitan Life Insurance, AECL (Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant) and also at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home. Joe was involved in Eucharist ministry, reader, parish council and bishop’s council within churches in the Glace Bay area. Joe will be sadly missed by his loving wife and friend of 53 years, Miriam (Cooke); sons, Kevin (Marjory), Halifax, Clifford (Catriona), Kentville; daughters, Sharon (Elmore) Cann, Glace Bay, and Sharlene, at home. Also surviving are cherished grandchildren, Kevin A. (Ellen), Colin (Tanya), Merika, Ryan, Nicole, Jennifer and great-grandchildren, Emma and Riley. Joe was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In honouring Joe’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Reserve Mines. Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
