SYBIL JANE GIGGEY

GIGGEY, SYBIL JANE - The death of Sybil Jane Giggey of Saint John occurred peacefully Wednesday, May 05, at the Saint John Regional Hospital following a sudden illness. Born in Saint John on May 31, 1914, she was the daughter of Charles and Lydie (Ring) Stackhouse. Sybil was four years old when her mother died. Her father later married Olive (Ring) Stackhouse, Lydie's sister, who then raised Sybil as her own daughter. Her family were long time residents of the city dating from the early 1800's. Her grandfather, James Alfred Ring, was an officer with Carleton Co. 8 of the West Saint John Fire Department. He later became a chief engineer on the west side and operated at the Great Saint John Fire of 1877. Sybil became a member of the original Saint John Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in the 1940's and went on to serve faithfully in the Carleton and Bayside Congregations. At the time of her death she was a member of the Rothesay Congregation. Sybil married Wilbert Hazen Giggey of Hampton, N.B., on Nov. 11, 1940. He became a long-time city employee and a vice president of the Saint John Real Estate Association. They remained life-long residents of the city and had two children. He predeceased her on May 3, 1993. She was also predeceased by three sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Joan, of French Village, and her son, John, of Halifax; ten grandchildren: Donald Ryder, French Village; Robin Giggey, Ottawa, Ont.; Clifton Ryder, Cornwall, Ont.; Andrew Ryder, Saint John; Andrea (Giggey) Hartin, Hamilton, Ont; Brandy (Ryder) Darling, Hampton; Christopher Giggey, Mississauga, Ont.; Kira-Lynn Giggey and Lisa Giggey, Halifax; Brendon Ryder, French Village; six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service is being held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Rothesay. Internment will at the Hampton Rural Cemetery.
