STEWART J. SHERWOOD

SHERWOOD, STEWART J. - The death of Stewart J. Sherwood of Upperton, husband of Gladys (Hanson) Sherwood occurred July 25, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Upham, February 1, 1918, son of the late Ford and Ethel (Verner) Sherwood. He attended school in Upham. He worked in lumber camps and sawmills around the area. Stewart and Gladys were married in Saint John on December 24, 1938 for 65 1/2 years. They bought a farm in Upperton in the 1940's where he milked cows for a number of years, then switched to beef cattle. He worked on his own wood lot, loved to hunt, fish and trap furs. He raised Belgian Draft horses which he used for giving sleigh rides. He also showed the horses at all the major shows from Halifax to Fredericton from 1961 - 1993. He never missed a live stock sale in Sussex on Wednesdays. He enjoyed card parties and attending horse pulls and auctions. His favourite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving besides his wife Gladys are two daughters Betty Bevans (David) of Upham, Phyllis Johnston (Travis) of Upperton; one son Vaughan Sherwood (Mary) of Upperton; his twin brother Stanley Sherwood of St. Martins; daughter-in-law Linda Sherwood of Upham; 14 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son Gordon Stewart Sherwood, granddaughter Marilyn Bevans, great granddaughter Ashley Bevans and his sister Elizabeth Kilpatrick. Resting at Reid's Funeral Home (832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton. The funeral will be held Tuesday at St. Peter's Church, Upham, with service at 2:00 pm. Interment in St. Peter's Cemetery.
