TOWNSEND, W.R. (BILL) - W.R. (Bill) Townsend, died peacefully at the Veteran's Health Unit on August 12th, 2004. Bill was the husband of Shirley Townsend (nee Staples), brother of Jean Dawson (Ted) of Montreal, and father of David Townsend (Marlyn) of Calgary, John Townsend (Jo Anne) of Fredericton and Alyson Townsend (Stephen Ward) of Rothesay. Bill was the grandfather of well loved grandchildren, Jack Townsend, Alanna Ward, and Sam Ward, and uncle of Suzanne and Bruce Dawson. Bill was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and grew up in Montreal, attending Westhill High School where he was renowned for his athletic abilities, including tennis, skiing, football and track. He spent his summers in beloved Cape Breton. Bill was a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF and RCAF from 1939 to 1945. He then earned a degree in forestry from UNB, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University. Bill loved the outdoors and was an avid Scout Leader. He was the first to introduce water-skiing to cottagers at Grand Lake. An active volunteer in his community, Bill was a member of a number of service clubs and associations including the Golden Club. He was an honorary Elder at St. Paul's United Church. A well respected professional, Bill was President of the Pharmaceutical Society of NB, a first member of the Public Examining Board of Canada and a member of the Hall Commission on Health Care. Bill was a passionate lover of music and he found no greater joy than being surrounded by his friends and family during a party at Sunshine Gardens. He was well loved for his humor, his unfailing good nature and his generous spirit. Bill's family would like to thank the Staff at the Veterans Health Unit, who helped Bill and his family over the last years. Bill's family would like to especially thank Dolly McCoy for her continued and unflagging support. There will be no visitation by request. A Memorial Service will take place on Monday August 16th, 2004 at 2:00 PM at St. Paul's United Church with Rev. Dr. David Fisher officiating. In honor of Bill, donations can be made to the Veterans Health Unit and would be appreciated by the family.
