ANGUS MacDONALD
MacDONALD, ANGUS - 82, Fredericton, died September 8, 2004 in the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, after a brief illness. Gus was born in Bell Island, Nfld., the son of May and Angus MacDonald. Schooled in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Gus commenced his education in engineering at New York University, but was drawn to journalism, becoming the Editor-in-Chief of The Argosy Weekly while continuing his studies at Mount Allison University. Gus' byline was a feature of the Moncton Times-Transcript for 40 years. He was a reporter's reporter and of consummate integrity, covering every session of the New Brunswick legislature for 30 years until his retirement in November of 1986. Gus was known as the Dean of the Legislative Press Gallery. Don Hoyt, wrote of Gus in the Telegraph-Journal on the occasion his retirement, "In the quarter century I've known him, he never once refused a reporter's plea for help." He was lauded by both sides of the House on his retirement and was honoured with a life membership in the Press Gallery. Gus' interest in public affairs and keen analytical skills never waned. He was a voracious reader of biographical and political treatise. He relished in spending time most mornings at a local coffee shop discussing contemporary events with a small band of cherished friends. Gus always had an insightful take, informed by his encyclopaedic knowledge of history, politics and world affairs. He is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Jean (Smythe), formerly of St. Stephen, and Jean's daughters Helen Kydd and Nancy Bateman, both of Halifax.
