PUGWASH - Erma Marguerite Wheaton, age 86 of Pugwash formerly of Amherst passed away on Monday, March 17, 2008, at the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash with her loving daughter Sandra by her side. Born on May 10, 1921, in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Kathleen (Sproule) Bird. She was an active member of the Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church where she served on several committees, member and past president of the Amherst Curling Club as well as the Chinchilla Association, I.T.C. and the square dancing club. In her younger years Erma studied at the University of Calgary where she obtained her first teaching licence and taught for several years at the Sheep Creek School in Millerville Alta. In 1958 she moved to the family farm in East Leicester where she commenced her duties as a teacher at the Oxford Elementary School and upgraded her studies at Mount Allison University achieving her BA/BED and became a principal in Oxford. Upon her retirement she enjoyed travelling to Europe, Scotland, Japan, Caribbean Cruise and many trips to Colorado and Alberta visiting children and grandchildren. Erma is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Larry) Atkinson of Truemanville, Vicki (Roger) Robichaud of Amherst, Debbie Hollis (Norm) of Riverview N.B., Roxanna (Hugh) Chalmers of Colorado U.S.A.; her sons, Curtis (Donna) Wheaton of Calgary Alta. and Blair (Katherine) Wheaton of Edmonton Alta.; sister, Faye Tabor of Bedford N.S.; brother, Don (Audrey) Bird of Amherst; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Wheaton (1983); sons, Glen, Gary in infancy and foster son, Hugh; sister, Beatrice Amos; brothers, Lee, and Herbert. Cremation has taken place under the care of Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906) Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. from Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, Amherst with Rev. Susan Estabrooks officiating. Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery at a later date.
